In The Beginning Was

Time. We are stuck in time. We are unable to set aside the constraints time establishes. If you are a physicist, you probably understand what time is and what it isn’t. I am not a physicist. With the advent of the theory of general relativity, we are challenged to think about time differently. While I understand that general relativity explains some things about time, I am unable to experience anything but time in the way we understand it. Time had a beginning, it is linear, and I am bound by it.

John 1:1-5 (CSB)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.

John, the apostle who wrote this passage, uses the expression, “The Word”. The Greek word for this term “The Word” is logos.  What does the Greek word logos mean?  “Henceλόγοςis, first of all, a collectingor collectionboth of things in the mind, and of words by which they are expressed. It therefore signifies both the outward formby which the inward thought is expressed, and the inward thoughtitself,”  Vincent’s Word Studies in the New Testament. (Electronic version)

We see Jesus as both the message or thought and the expression of that thought. We see He was present in the beginning. He did not originate with His human conception and subsequent birth into our world. When was the beginning? We see the beginning in Genesis 1:1. The beginning of all things in our physical world. The beginning of time. The beginning of our universe. He has been present as God, with God since the beginning of all things. In fact, it was through Him that all things were created. The world was shrouded in spiritual darkness. He came bringing life. This life is the beacon that lights the landscape, guides our steps, exposes obstacles, and chases away darkness. We  walk in light and life.

Are you in darkness? Are you in need of life? Jesus is the answer to those things. Look to Him. There are no answers outside of who He is, what He has done, and what He has said.

Lord, let Jesus’ life shine in my darkness and by it, let me see.
