One of the most stressful things about living in America is the constant dissatisfaction we feel over not having what we want. What is curious about this discontent, is that we have far more of everything than most of the world. In fact, a whole industry surrounds the stress we have because we have way too much stuff. We are constantly bombarded with images communicating to us that we should be dissatisfied with our life and situation due to the fact we do not possess what someone else does, or what we could possess, whether it be an item, a situation, an experience, or an accomplishment. We find ourselves viewing everything in our lives, not as freedom and abundance, but as restriction, want and discontent.
Philippians 4:11-13 (ESV)
11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
This verse is often quoted to support people wanting to accomplish things. What has Paul learned to do? He has learned to be content in all things. Specifically he has learned to be content in all financial situations. He is not claiming that he can master all things, he is claiming that he can continue to live and do what God has given him to do, regardless. Regardless of what? Resources. He sometimes has them, sometimes doe not. He has learned to be content. How? He seeks strength from Christ. He is not emotionally connected to his plenty, nor immobilized by his lack.
What can we learn from this? Can we take our eyes off our life situation and look to Christ? Can we see that He is our comfort and our “plenty?” Can we walk through all that life throws at us through His strength?
