Light Shines In The Darkness

We go camping once a year. OK, we are in a fifth wheel, so maybe it is not really camping. However, we don’t have any hookups and I still use the outhouse. Camping gives us a glimpse of what the world used to be like. I live in a rural area, so I don’t have that much light pollution. At least it doesn’t seem like that much. However one thing about camping is how dark it is. Going to the outhouse in the dark is scary! You can see nothing beyond the flashlight beam. You never know….there may be a crazed chipmunk waiting to attack!

Isaiah 9:2 (CSB)
2 The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
a light has dawned
on those living in the land of darkness.

John 1:1-5 (CSB)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.

John 8:12 (CSB)
12 Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”

The world used to be a very dark place. Light was expensive and inefficient. The darkness provided cover for evil and was very dangerous. One could not know what lurked beyond the lit visual field….like perhaps a crazed chipmunk. The darkness also hid the path. A person would have to be very careful placing each step. It served to trap people indoors until once again the sun rose at dawn.

The world was created in light. God spoke and there was light. The world was not intended to be in its current state. God created us to have an unbroken relationship with Him. That relationship, however, was destroyed in the garden. Through Satan’s deception, Adam and Eve began to doubt God. Satan convinced them to act on this distrust and seek a different relationship than the one in existence. The result? Mankind and God would no longer share in a relationship of trust and intimacy. Mankind was plunged into darkness……spiritual darkness. We were without sight, left to feel and grope around in the darkness. Evil lurked in every corner.

Jesus’ coming changed all this. He came to light the darkness, the spiritual darkness. His coming was as revolutionary to our spiritual state as electricity has been to our physical world. We no long must grope around in spiritual darkness. Light has come. We can embrace the light of Christ. He is the light that was promised to pierce the darkness. He is the light of the world and darkness can not overcome Him. When we belong to Him it cannot overcome us.

Ephesians 5:8 (CSB)
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light—
