Playing hide and seek with toddlers is a delight. Toddlers think you cannot see them if they cannot see you. They hide from you by covering their eyes with their hands. They get a tremendous amount of joy playing this game. We play with them with, loving every minute, because we understand this is a developmental phase. They will eventually learn that you can see them unless they have hidden their body in a secret place
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. 14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:12-16 (ESV)
Most of us are involved in either hide or seek with God. We are either seeking Him or hiding from Him. Trying to hide from God is like the toddler version of hide and seek. We don’t want Him to see us, so we try to hide. The truth is, He can see everything. There is nothing hidden from Him. To try to hide is to trick ourselves, not Him. We can have a wrong perception about what it means to be found. We think God is waiting to punish and shame us in our sin. But, what does our Bible tell us? Why is it able to dive deep into our inner being? It tells us the truth. It tells us about ourselves and about God.
We were not just wrong in our sin, we were dead. God can see and He wants to make a way for us. He has sent His son, Jesus. He fixed the rift caused by our sin. Jesus’ atonement bridged the separation. We have passed from death to life. We can draw near to God with confidence because Jesus has covered our sin.
You can run but you can’t hide……why would you? God sees you. He has a solution to your sin problem. You can confess and ask for forgiveness. But, He sees it all. He sees the good, bad, happy, sad, joy, and pain. It is not hidden from Him. Confess, be cleansed, and draw near to Him. He is waiting.
Lord,
Change me from an hider to a seeker. Pierce my soul so that I may see what I think I am hiding from you. Bring me into Your presence and grant me your grace and mercy. I am seen.
Amen
