Salt. We are familiar with salt……I am too familiar with salt. But in the ancient world, they had a much broader perspective of salt than we have. One of the uses of salt was for fertilizer. Thus, it was “salt of the earth.” (Christianity Today Oct 2016 “You are the manure of the earth”) We are to be the salt of the earth…the fertilizer.
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.
Matthew 5:13 (CSB)
What does it mean to amend the soil in a way that nourishes those things planted? This is our charge as Christians. We are to nourish others. If we have no substance, we cannot nourish.
As we face the coming weeks, how can we be nourishment? First, we can preach the good news of Christ. Sometimes we feel inhibited and afraid. We are not sure how others will respond. We do not want their disapproval. We should not assault people with the gospel, but neither should we keep it a secret. We forget that it is good news, which is literally what the word “gospel” means.
So, what is the good news? The good news is Jesus! God sent His son to reconcile us to Himself. He walked this earth, taught, and died on the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice. As a result, we can be made right with God, can draw near to Him, walk in relationship with Him, and have our lives transformed. That my friends is good news!
In what other way can we be salt, to help others to flourish? If there was ever a time to become a prayer warrior, now is the time. The Bible instructs us to pray. God, for whatever reason, has made us a part of the process through which He intervenes in our world. We do not always understand or see Him at work, but He is. He cares about us, intervenes in our lives, and reveals Himself to us. Prayer is the God of the universe asking us to look to Him and to connect with Him. Prayer is a two-way street. Prayer is one of the means by which we get to know God and dwell with Him. This is a call to prayer. It is a call to come together to pray for one another, to lift each other up, and to encourage each other. It is a call for God to reveal Himself to all of us. It is a call to pray for ourselves, our loved ones, our friends, our acquaintances, our enemies, strangers, and those we are not even aware of. It is a time for every tribe, nation and tongue to come together on behalf of each other. So…lets do it!YOu
