Are You Hungry and Thirsty?

I have an obsessive personality. I get something in my mind and I obsess over it endlessly. I mentally run scenarios or data constantly. The internet feeds this. I can endlessly look up what I am currently unable to let go. This is something advertisers exploit.  But, can I improve on the subject manner that I obsess over? What if I craved righteousness as much as these other things?

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.  (Matthew 5:6 CSB)

I have heard it said that what you love or value is the thing you think about and pursue the most. Or to rephrase the thought…..I will think about the things I love. What is it I love? The things I think about are a clue. If I seldom think about God or the things of God, what does this mean about my heart? To what does my heart belong? If I spend most of my time obsessing over something, isn’t that the thing I love? If we are to hunger and thirst for righteousness, doesn’t it follow that we are pursuing righteousness? How do we do this? I am convinced that God must give this to us. He will provide the “hunger and thirst.” We must, however, desire righteousness and then ask him. Paul tells us repeatedly that our righteousness comes by faith and is from Christ alone. Pursuing righteousness is pursuing Christ. Pursuing and becoming righteous comes only by pursuing and obeying the call of Christ. We must know Him to be like Him. We cannot become righteous by trying harder and harder. We become righteous through the power of the Holy Spirit to enable us to yield ourselves to Christ.

The principle or value of kingdom living is the pursuit of righteousness. But what outcome can we expect? Jesus says we will be filled. Filled with what? Filled with righteousness. He will grant this desire of our heart….righteousness. Righteousness that comes by faith in Christ and is allowed to play out in our lives through His presence.

What do you need to do today in order to hunger and thirst for righteousness?

Help me to set aside and my worldly desires. Realign all that I strive for, hope for, and think about. Turn my heart and my pursuits to You. Give me a hunger and thirst for righteousness. Fill me. Fill me with Your presence. Fill me with your righteousness. Make the pursuit of right relationship and kingdom living the cry of my heart.
